The Art of Make-Up in the Legend of Minak Djinggo and Damar Wulan Show

The students of make up and beauty therapy department, YSU Faculty of Engineering presented their final projects in the Legend of Minak Djinggo and Damar Wulan show at the YSU auditorium on Tuesday (November 11th, 2014. Hurin Chya Adni, the chief of the committee said that the legend was wrapped in an attractive and modern performance and it was hoped that it would attract the youth to preserve the tradtional culuture.
Yuswati, M.Pd., the head of the department said that the students have been working hard for this exhibition. “The students designed and conduct the exhibition like professionals, they were like professional event organizers. They also develop their skills as make-up artists and do the characters’ make-ups.”
“This is the 7th year of the final project exhibition, and this time, the 25 students, they have it in a traditional drama performance in which each student does the make-up for each character,” she added.
The legend of Minak Djinggo and Damar Wulan from Banyuwangi, East Java, continuously develops into multiple versions of the same folk tale.
The story is rich in morals. One of them is that breaking a promise leads into problems. in this story, Ratu Ayu Kencana Wungu, the queen, (ratu means a queen) broke her promise to marry Joko Umbaran, the man who defeated Kebo Marcuet. Her objection caused the war between Majapahit and Blambangan kingdoms to break out.
Directed by Agus Leyloor, the show was exceptional. The students of the make-up and beauty therapy department showed their skills in doing the make-up for the characters. During the show, the audience voted for their favourite make-up artist. The winner was Maftukhatul Maulina, who did the make-up for Dewi Anjasmara (a goddess), the last chilld of Patih Longender, the prime minister of Majapahit. (yuliana)
