BAHTERA, ‘THE ARK’ THEATRE: “THE LOVER’S SCULPTURE”

The annual drama performances of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Department has begun. This year’s performances will be of five performancing teams. They are Bahtera ‘the Ark’ theatre, Cermin ‘the Mirror’ theatre, Topeng ‘the Mask’ theatre, Sinawang ‘the one seen from far away’ theatre, and Arcana theatre. The five teams will be performing in a row of shows from December 1st to 22nd 2014. Bahtera theatre was the first team to stage their performance (12/1st/2014). Entititled Patung Kekasih (the Lover’s Sculpture), the performance was supervised by Jaka Ahmad.

Patung Kekasih was a story about two sculptors fighting to get Wanita Pertiwi (the motherland woman) to be sold to the Businessman. The old sculptor died after being poisoned by the young sculptor, his own son. Through the dialogues, the characters expressed criticism for the government and it needed some moment to reflect on the script which was written in the New Order Era.

The outdoor performance was a ‘brave’ one. The stage was creatively decorated with used plastic bottles. The team has successfully transformed the Building C13 garden into a sculpture garden.
Dr. Nurhadi, M.Hum., the teacher for drama, gave his appreciation for the students’ hardwork. “I really appreciate the process they have been through for months. They surely have given their best,” he says.

The schedule for the performances is Sinawang Theatre, Arifin C. Noer’s Orkes Madun 2: Umang-Umang (12/9th/2014); Cermin Theatre, Mouliere’s Gadis-gadis Pelagak (12/15th/2014); Arcana Theatre, Agustan T Syam’s Gubernur Nyentrik (12/18th/2014); Topeng Theatre, N. Rintarno’s Sampek & Engtay (12/22th/2014). (Yuliana)
