On Monday, January 12th 2015, Prof. Dr. Rochmat Wahab, M.Pd., M.A., Rector of Yogyakarta State University and Prof. Heung-Soon Park, Dean of Graduate School of Sun Moon University, signed the renewed MoU between the two universities at the Rectorate Building of Yogyakarta State University.

In 2002, former President of Sun Moon University, Prof. Kyung June lee, Ph.D. and former Rector of Yogyakarta State University, Prof. Suyanto, Ph.D. signed the MoU on collaboration on educational programs and activities.  Previously, YSU and Sun Moon University had conducted several collaboration activities such as student exchange and joining Asian Universities Federation annual conference. Since the MoU  has expired in 2007, both universities finally agreed to revive the MoU.

The new MoU focuses on collaboration in establishing joint academic programs at YSU, with the sponsorship of special funds by the Ministry of Education, Republic of Korea.

"We would like to renew our partnership by strengthening international education and to explore collaboration for joint programs," Park said. "It will be a good idea to conduct collaboration in more specific areas so that we can set up the programs."

In his  speech, YSU Rector encouraged both academic and cultural programs. "We hope that the collaboration between YSU and Sun Moon University can be enhanced and we plan to visit Sun Moon University in April for a further discussion on the programs," Rochmat said.

A discussion session following the MoU signing was focused on specifying areas of collaboration. Joint programs, student exchange, staff exchange and participation in international conference for Asian universities  are among programs feasible to conduct. Sun Moon University emphasizes the collaboration in the field of International Peace Education and Korean Language.

"The Korean Ministry of Education will provide a substantial amount of funds provided that the collaboration programs mutually develop the partnering universities in the specified areas of collaboration," Park added. (Yuliana)
