Providing Distributed Access to Education: Encouraging Vocational High School Students to Study at YSU Faculty of Economics

“Continuing education is an precious opportunity for one’s development. It is through education that people can enhance their contribution to the community. Education is a better way to improve our contribution to the nation and community development,”said Drs. Budi Sulistya, the Head of the Administration Division at the Faculty of Economics.

It was a visit by Panyingkiran 1 Public Vocational High School students and teachers to YSU Faculty of Economics. As many as 50 students visited the faculty on Wednesday, March 18th 2015.

“This visit is aimed at introducing the students to continuing education to higher education,” said Nenden Resmiyati, S.Pd., a teacher from 1 Panyingkiran Public Vocational High School.

“We hope that our students can be motivated and find information about continuing their education, especially at Yogyakarta State University,” said Winarno, S.H., M.Pd, another teacher from the school.

Nurhadi, M. M., the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs of the Faculty of Economics said that a number of YSU students are from Majalengka, West Java, in which the school is located. “If you are accepted to study here, you should join students’ activities. The activities you join will contribute to higher possibility of getting scholarships,” he said.

Budi futher explained that currently, YSU is collaborating with a number of local governments in Indonesia such as governments of Biak Regency and South Sumatra Province. Thus, there is a possibility for Majalengka government to collaborate with YSU.

During the visit, the students were then given a presentation about choosing a department in a higher education institution. “First, you have to find out about the accreditation. This is to reflect on the criteria to assess the quality of the department such as teacher qualifications, facilities, textbooks used, and the curriculum,” Budi said.

At the end of Budi’s presentation, the students were invited in a question and answer session about education at the faculty.
