To improve children awareness on healthy environment, UNY students from K008 team organized an Environmental Literation Program at Ngablak Elementary school, Bantul. This program involves students from the 5th grade at SDN Ngablak. This activity successfully attracted students’ enthusiasm in learning further about environment.

The learning process is done through 3 methods, namely theory, game and student work. On the first day, students are introduced to the importance of protecting the environment, especially on how important it is to throw trash in its place. On the second day, the students were guided by students playing a wide game about the environment. For the third day, students make creative works as an implementation of learning about reuse, recycle, and reduce waste. This environmental literacy activity is launched especially at SDN Ngablak because the school location is quite near with Piyungan landfill. Hopefully, this program will improve students’ creativity and innovative approach on waste management through recycle and reuse effort.

Leader of K008 team, Muchamad Syarif Hidayatullah said that Environmental Literacy was not only set to provide learning activities about the importance of throwing garbage in its place. But it also involves students’ motoric activity to get involved directly in managing waste.
"We hope that this activity will give positive mindset on how to deal with environment problem intelligently and creatively and creating positive stuff as the by product,” he added.

Nuriyanto, teacher of SDN Ngablak hope that this program will develop children creativity in reuse and recycle non organic waste into useful stuff. (Eka Widyastuti)
