It has been recently reported that a student of cooperation program between Education Authorities of South Sumatra and Yogyakarta State University (YSU), just grabbed a fantastic, non-academic achievement. He is Ujang Hartato, a student of Accounting Education of Faculty of Economics year 2012. He won National Bahtsu ‘Ilmi Al-Qur’an (BIQ) of Capacity Development and Tahsinul Qur’an, Faculty of Tarbiya and Teaching Sciences, Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University (UIN SUKA). This competition was held on 23—24 December 2015, with 9 finalists from universities around Indonesia, namely YSU, Airlangga University, Gadjah Mada University, Brawijaya University, Malang State University, and etc.

Ujang is the only individual delegation who advanced to the Best 9 after going through two selection steps, namely abstract and full paper selection.

Concentrating on education, Ujang raised an issue of the hearing impaired in reciting Koran, considering that they require two-way communication to learn. Thus, they expect visual learning media. From that point, Ujang utilized the advancement in technology to help those hearing impaired to understand the content of Koran, namely the Android application as education media of Koran for the hearing impaired.

“Alhamdulillah, after doing optimal effort, I could make the University and Education Authorities of South Sumatra proud of me. I hope this app could bring benefit and be extended and followed up to remove the obstacles of muslim hearing impaired in reciting Koran”, says Ujang when interviewed in the field trip with other finalists. Learning from the past failure, Ujang made some improvements on the education media, writing style, and presentation to be more attractive for better performance. (Ibnu Zainal A./Fadhli)
