YSU Community Service: Training in Active-Creative-Engaging Natural Sciences Learning Activities for Islamic Elementary School Teachers

YSU Community Service Team from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences held a training in Active-Creative-Engaging Natural Sciences Learning Activities for Islamic Elementary School teachers in Muhammadiyah Elementary School at Munggur Village, Subdistrict of Ngeposari, Semanu Districts, Gunungkidul Regency, Yogyakarta. (Sunday, March 15th 2015)
The training was part of the programs commemorating YSU 51st anniversary. Other programs include charity, traditional games competitions, bazaar, and a rice harvest festival. During then event, the YSU community service team also donate learning stationery for the pupils, represented by Dr. Hartono, the Dean of YSU Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
During the program, the teachers were given a training to conduct active-creative-engaging learning activities by using materials available in the school environment and nature laboratory. For chemistry, the teachers practised Borax experiment to test the Borax contamination in daily foods such as noodles, meat balls, tofu, and some traditional foods made of tapioca. For physics, the teachers were given a training to comprehend the characteristics of substances and physical and chemical changes in substances they use in daily life. They also learned to conduct experiment in static electricity to demonstrate that similar poles of two objects charged with electricity repel each other by using soft drink plastic bottles, straws and other simple tools. For mathematics and biology, the teachers learn to utilize simple materials and goods in home or school environments.
YSU Rector, Prof. Dr. Rochmat Wahab ,M.Pd., M.A.,also attended the opening of the training and encouraged the teachers to patiently teach the students and conduct engaging learning activities. “ Through active, creative and engaging learning activities, we can produce future scientists not only in metropolitan schools, but also in rural schools,”he said.
