YSU Delegation in the ASEAN University Youth Summit 2015

Three YSU students namely Siti Maesyaroh (Management Study Program), Shinta Widyarini (Accounting Education Study Program), dan Janu Muhammad (Geography Education Study Program) joined the ASEAN University Youth Summit (AUYS) 2015 at the Universiti Utara Malaysia, Malaysia. The conference was held from January 26th-29th 2015.
This year’s theme was “ASEAN Youth Network Through Volunteerism.” 100 delegates of various universities in Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei Darrusalam, the Philippines, Cambodia, and Malaysia shared their ideas, built their network in volunteerism in ASEAN, and started collaborations in empowering the community in the 2015 ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).
YAB Dato’ Seri Haji Mukhriz Tun Mahathir, the Chief Minister of the State of Kedah, officially opened the summit. In this summit, the Round Table Discussion I allowed the participants to discuss the role of youth volunteers as the agents of change towards ASEAN community in 2015. Each university delegation delivered their opinions as the moderator invited them to answer the questions.
The discussion was engaging when the delegations from different countries shared their experience in volunteerism. Janu Muhammad as a member of the Indonesian delegation presented his voluntary activity in ‘Omah Baca Karung Goni’ (‘Sackcloth Book House’), a library established through book donations. and volunteering activities in his community. The round table discussion was closed with resolution of round table discussion under the theme ‘Strengthening Youth Volunteering in ASEAN.’
In the evening activities, the participants joined sharing sessions on Passage to Asean (P2A). P2A is an organization for universities to conduct sit-in and student exchange programs among its members.
During the summit, the delegations joined volunteering activities in local kindergartens and elementary schools. They helped the pupils to clean the school environment and assisted the teachers during the teaching and learning process. In the closing ceremony and cultural performances, YSU delegation performed Betawi and Sumbawa traditional dances. Their performances were captivating and got a big round of applause. After AUYS 2015, the students participating are expected to conduct collaborations in social and cultural activities.
