Student Activity Units

Student activity units at Yogyakarta State University serve as forums for students to develop their talents and interests. 

 

  •  Research Unit

 

Research becomes a significant aspect of the life at the university, as one of the Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi (Three Main Responsibilities of Higher Education). Therefore, Yogyakarta State University always encourages its students to conduct research in order to prepare them as quality graduates who are excellent at research. The students will learn and practice how to conduct research in the Research Unit, a student activity unit founded in 1993 that deals with research contributing to knowledge at the university as well as national levels.

This unit has three divisions: organization, research, and entrepreneurship. These divisions collaborate in conducting various programs such as scientific discussions, research studies, research exploration, seminars and workshops on research methodology, mentor training, workshops on research proposal writing, which are beneficial for its members, especially in developing their scientific potential.

 

  •   EKSPRESI Journalistic Unit

The EKSPRESI Journalistic Unit is the only university’s press which aims at developing students’ journalism talents. It facilitates the students to be critical in comprehending the current issues and finding the facts through their writings. They also learn journalism in some aspects such as media watch, photography, graphic designs, media layout, offset production, media marketing, event organizer, etc.

 

  •   “Magenta” Radio

The Magenta Radio Broadcasting Unit is a student activity unit of Yogyakarta State University which broadcasts YSU’s official student radio station “Magenta Radio”. The purposes are to develop and sharpen students’ talents and interest in broadcasting as well as to actively support the implementation of the university’s visions and missions by dynamically broadcasting information of the university to its listeners.

 

  •  Student Activity Forum of Foreign Languages

The Student Activity Forum of Foreign Languages (SAFEL) is a student activity unit of Yogyakarta State University which focuses on foreign languages learning such as English, German, French, Japanese, and Korean. The unit which brings its motto “Rule the World through Languages” was founded to fulfill the YSU stakeholders’ aims to improve the quality of the students by equipping them with foreign language skills. To manage its organization and activities, this unit has five departments and sub-departments:

      1.      FOLT (Foreign Language Training)

        This department deals with training on five languages, held every semester for YSU students. Furthermore, this department also regularly conducts TOEFL trainings and workshops on tutoring.

       2.      PS (Public Speaking)

         This department conducts programs such as Workshop on Public Speaking, Workshop on Debating, English Day and Deutschtag, Speech Contest, Debating Competition, Speech, Speaking Club, and PS Got Talent.

       3.      CCU-LM (Cross Cultural Understanding-Learning Media)

         This department is concerned with cross cultural understanding. It conducts programs such as movie discussion, wall magazines, bulletins, library, workshops on journalism, and cultural sharing with foreign students.

      4.      HRD (Human Resources Department)

         This department plays important roles in developing the quality of SAFEL’s human resources. It is responsible for new recruitment, members upgrading, open house, and basic training for the organization.

     5.      Public Relations

         This department is responsible for maintaining good cooperation with other student activities or organizations in and within the university. It is involved in publications on social networking sites, website as well as email,  universities tour, etc.

 

  •   Tae Kwon Do

 

The Taekwondo Unit of Yogyakarta State University was founded in 1989 and has conducted various activities related to this Korean martial art. Its office is located on the second floor of Student Center Building. This sport unit conducts its regular practices for its members every Wednesday and Sunday at 4 p.m. up to 6 p.m. in the martial arts hall of the Faculty of Sport Sciences. It also sends its members to participate in some competitions such as the 2010 Poom Sae Competition in South Korea in which it became the first runner up.

 

  • Tennis

 

 

 

 

 

This student activity unit concerns on developing students’ talents on tennis as well as their interest. It conducts regular practices in outdoor and indoor tennis fields, located in the west of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences building.

  •    Chess

 

This student activity unit accommodates students’ talents and interest in chess. It is officially founded on April 30, 1983 and has several routine agendas such as weekly practices, National University Chess Competition, Internal Members Tournament, etc. Furthermore, it also represents the university in some competitions. To run these programs, it has some departments such as department of regeneration, department of practice and competition, department of internal affairs, and department of public relations.

 

  •  Table Tennis

This student activity unit accommodates students’ talents and interest in table tennis through its regular practices. Furthermore, this unit represents the university in some competitions in which it has gained a lot of achievement, in national as well as international levels. In improving the skills of its members, this unit conducts its regular practices every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 4.20 p.m. up to 7 p.m. and physical rehearsals every Sunday at 8 a.m.

 

  •    Pencak Silat

Pencak Silat or silat is the Indonesian traditional martial arts which has been famous worldwide. At Yogyakarta State University, students can learn pencak silat intensively at Pencak Silat Unit by firstly registering themselves at its office located at the Student and Multicultural Center Building, 2nd Floor. Besides conducting regular practices every Monday and Friday, this unit also conducts pilgrimages, try in try outs, displays, level examinations, and competitions for students. It also participates in many competitions in local, national, as well as international levels.

 

  • Karate

 

This student activity unit accommodates karate talent and interests of students of Yogyakarta State University and also the public. Founded in 1975, this student activity unit applies shotokan school of karate (called “INKAI” in Indonesia). It conducts some interesting activities for its members such as Long March, Exploration (physical training in open nature), and UKM Karate Cup (internal karate competition). It also facilitates its members to participate in karate kyu tests and karate competitions in local, national, as well as international levels.

 

  •  Red Cross

 

Red Cross Unit of Yogyakarta State University deals with humanitarian activities such as blood donation, which is conducted twice a year, twenty four-hour blood supply service, social service, voluntary activities, etc. Being able to help other people is the main mission of this student organization. A lot of experience can be gained by joining this organization.

 

  • Basketball

 

The basketball unit of Yogyakarta State University accommodates student’s interest in basketball and helps sharpen their skills through its regular practices and trainings. Supported by adequate facilities, the basketball athletes of the university can practice well. Some of its members become basketball athletes who represent YSU in various basketball competitions and bring a good name of the university.

 

  • Archery

The Archery Unit of Yogyakarta State University is a forum to develop students’ talents and interest in archery and they who have strong motivation to gain achievement in local, national, as well as international levels. It was established in 1998 and since, had contributed a lot of achievements for the university at the local, national, and international levels. It conducts it regular practices every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 3-6 p.m. in the archery field of the Faculty of Sport Sciences. For those who are interested in joining the activities, they can register at its office located on the third floor of the Student and Multicultural Center Building.

 

  •  “MADAWIRNA” Nature Lover

This student activity unit is a forum for nature lovers who have strong willingness to explore the nature wilderness as well as protect it. It was founded in 1975 and now it has four divisions:

1.      Rafting

2.      Rock and Wall Climbing

3.      Mountaineering

4.      Caving

 

  •  “Citra Derap Bahana” Marching Band

 

“Citra Derap Bahana” Marching Band of Yogyakarta State University combines both arts and sports in its activities. Therefore, it cannot be separated from physical and musical trainings as well as marching band performances and championships.  Being founded in 1973, this unit has gained a lot of achievements both in local and national levels. Students who are interested in joining this unit can go to the Student and Multicultural Center Building 1st Floor to register and practice immediately.

 

  •   “SICMA” Band

 

The “SICMA” Band is a student activity unit that deals with music, especially related to musical bands. By joining this unit, students of Yogyakarta State University can learn how to perform in any musical performances and manage shows, musical performances, as well as the organization. Interested students can join this unit by registering at its secretariat at the Student and Multicultural Centre Building 1st Floor.

 

  •   “UNSTRAT” Literature and Theatre Study

UNSTRAT is a student activity unit that deals with literary arts, theater, and cinematography. Members of UNSTRAT can practice these forms of arts through its six departments, i.e.:

1.      Department of Literature

2.      Department of Theater

3.      Department of Cinematography

4.      Department of Production

5.      Department of Artistic

6.      Department of Library and Documentation

 

  •  KAMASETRA

KAMASETRA (also known as the Student Association of Traditional Art, Theatre, and Drama) has three divisions in developing student talents. The first division deals with karawitan and padhalangan (Javanese traditional music and puppet show), the second division deals with dances, and the last division deals with theater (ketoprak, ludruk, wayangwong, etc).This student association has a Research and Development Staff interested incultural changes over time, especially concerning on traditional arts. Therefore, KAMASETRA can always develop in this era of globalization and modernization.

 

  •  “Swara Wadhana” Choir

“Swara Wadhana” Choir Unit facilitates its members to develop their talents and interest in singing in choir through vocal classes. This student activity unit was formally established in 1986, and has made a lot of achievements since. This unit conducts various programs, including:

a.       regular practice on Tuesday and Thursday at 4 p.m.,

b.      performing in university’s formal agendas,

c.       performing at other institutions,

d.      conducting independent concerts, and

e.       participating in choir competitions.

The students who are interested in joining the choir can visit its office on the third floor of Student Center building.

 

  •   Visual Arts and Photography

 

SERUFO, also known as Visual Art and Photography Unit, is a student activity unit that deals with visual arts, including drawing, painting, graphics, arts and crafts, sculptures, and photography. This unit actively conducts exhibitions and participates in other exhibitions. Through these programs, its members can exhibit their works and get opportunities to sharpen their talents and skills.

 

  •   Student Cooperative

KOPMA (Koperasi Mahasiswa) UNY is an independent student cooperative which develops students’ business and entrepreneurship skills. It has the missions of becoming a business centre which is based on active participation of its members and becoming a dynamic and competitive forum to bring welfare for its members. It also tries to produce skilled entrepreneurs which can develop its body and society.

 

  •  “PASOPATI” Student Regiment

 

The PASOPATI Student Regiment is aimed at creating strong mentality of its members so that they will be aware of fulfilling their obligation to defend their nation and be responsible for their tasks as students, fighters, as well as thinkers in the campus and in the society. Many programs such as mountaineering, caving, outbound, etc. are held by this student activity to develop the physical and mental skills of its members.

 

  •   Scout

 

This student activity unit develops and sharpens the students’ interests and skills in scouting. YSU Scout was founded on May 2, 1980 by establishing a front group of scout 1507 and 1508 with the name Racana W.R. Supratman and Racana Fatmawati.

This organization also trains and gives knowledge of scout to students in schools. It also teaches the members to have responsibility toward themselves and society.

 

  •  Moslem Student Union

 

This student activity unit unites Moslem students enrolled at Yogyakarta State University and becomes a lembaga dakwah (an Islamic body which shares Islamic knowledge and teaching to people). It conducts various fun and beneficial activities such as outbound, games, discussion, mentoring, seminar, etc. Its office is located at the 2nd floor of the Student and Multicultural Center Building.

 

  • Hindu Student Union

 

This student activity unit unites Hindu students in Yogyakarta, and more specifically, for currently enrolled Hindu students at YSU. This unit actively conducts programs for its members such as camping, Melasti ceremony, Dharmasanti ceremony, seminars, displays, and collaborative programs with other student activity units.

 

  • Christian Student Union

 

This student activity unit was founded in 1982 to unite Christian students at Yogyakarta State University.  It has three divisions. The first division deals with guidance, union, prayer, analysis, and regeneration. The second division deals with human resources development, creativity (futsal and choir) and multimedia. The last division deals with social activities, such as public relations and coordination. It also conducts interesting religious programs for its members such as Cat n’ Dog, Easter Celebration, The anniversary of the organization, welcoming new students, Big Fellowship, Inauguration, Discussion, and Christmas Assembly.

 

  • Catholic Student Union

 

This student activity unit unites all Catholic students at Yogyakarta State University and takes part in realizing the university’s missions to produce pious graduates who strongly adhere the Indonesia’s highest philosophies, Pancasila. It works based on Catholic values, Pancasila, and the 1945 Constitution in conducting these following activities.

a.       Religion: conducting religious activities

b.      Study: conducting activities that develop lecturing, applied sciences, and other activities

c.       Public relations: conducting activities to promote good relations with other parties, and participating in various programs in the university

d.      Kinship: conducting agendas that build strong relationships among its members

e.       Finance: conducting programs that collect funds for the organization
