Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) recently concluded the Education and Technology Summer School (ETSS) 2024, an international program that underscored the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education. With the theme “EcoEduTech: Potential of AI in Reshaping Teaching and Learning,” the event attracted 28 participants, including doctoral candidates, early-career researchers, and professionals from Germany, France, Norway, the Netherlands, Malaysia, Laos, Brazil, Sudan, and Indonesia.
Held in a blended format, the program began with an online phase in September, facilitating initial networking and discussions. The core of the event was a week-long on-site session at UNY from October 7-11, which combined academic presentations with interactive workshops and cultural tours around Yogyakarta. The event concluded with a reflective online phase from October 14-18, providing participants a platform to discuss research outcomes and future collaborations.
The academic sessions featured six renowned speakers, including Prof. Dr. Thomas Köhler from Technische Universität Dresden, Prof. Dr. Ulf-Daniel Ehlers of Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg, and Assoc. Prof. Suraya Hamid of University Malaya. Other contributors included Prof. Mario Gandra (University of Rio de Janeiro), Prof. Myriam Danièle Coco (University of Bergen), and Assoc. Prof. Cha-Hsuan Liu (Wittenborg University of Applied Sciences). They shared insights into how AI can transform education by enhancing student engagement, improving teaching methodologies, and addressing global sustainability challenges.
According to Prof. Dr. Moch. Bruri Triyono, chair of the organizing committee, the event aimed to explore both theoretical and practical applications of AI in educational contexts. “ETSS 2024 provided a platform to exchange ideas and innovate solutions for pressing global educational challenges. The involvement of participants from diverse disciplines and countries added valuable perspectives to our discussions,” he remarked.
