The lack of public awareness of the danger of disposing cooking oil waste directly to the ground is one of the reason for UNY students who participating in community service program in Jaranmati 1 Hamlet to held training on recycling waste cooking oil into soap. The Training on making soap from used cooking oil by students of the KKN RM UNY K027 was carried out on Sunday, July 28, 2019. There are 15 members of local youth organization and 5 housewives from Jaranmati 1 Hamlet who participated on the training.

The ingredients used for making soap are used cooking oil, coconut oil, alkaline solution (NaOH), fragrance oil and activated charcoal. The function of coconut oil is to add foam to the soap. To give aesthetic feels, fragrance oil is added to the soap mixture.

“I’m happy to be able to take part in training on making soap from cooking oil waste. It is common for used cooking oil to be disposed directly. The fact that we can turn the waste into soap is surprising. I think it will be useful to use the soap for everyday use. Apart from the good news, I also understand the danger of disposing used cooking oil directly to the ground,” said Mrs. Darto, one of participants of the training program. (Salma Husna)
