Students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Science, YSU won the 1st place in the Scientific Writing Contest (LKTI) National Scientist in Action (SIA) FMIPA ITS 2016, organized by Students Executive Board of Faculty Mathematics and Science, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember. The event is one of the great events of FMS ITS. In this competition was represented by Herianto (Science Education 2013), Anggistia Devianti Iswanto (Science Education 2013), and Dinar Indah Lufita Sari (Chemistry 2014), they are members of the Student Activity Unit, KSI-Mist, YSU. In the event, the second prize and the third prize were won by a team of Brawijaya University, while the fourth runner up was won by the host, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember. LKTIN was attended by 118 teams from the national and private universities in Indonesia, which is then selected to be 10 teams based on the assessment paper, and 10 teams are required to present their work at the ITS campus. 10 teams that managed to be the finalist are YSU (1 team), Diponegoro University (1 team), Bandung Institute of Technology (1 team), Brawijaya Universities (4 teams) and ITS (3 teams). In the event there were three points of assessment; papers, presentations and posters.
National Scientific Essay Contest Scientist in Action (SIA) FMS ITS 2016 came up with the theme 'the role of young innovators in developing sustainable development towards independent Indonesia`. SIA LKTIN 2016’s final was held on Saturday, April 2, 2016 in the LPPM green environment building, ITS. The team leader, Herianto said that competition in this event was so tight, all the teams had a good work, so it was difficult to predict who will be the winner. "Thank God FMS YSU team successfully obtained the first position" he said.
At the event, the students of FMS YSU came with the title, "Feed biscuit for ruminants: the development of animal feed biscuit from waste straw, bran and banana weevil as a source of fiber for ruminant animals in order to overcome the scarcity of forage in the dry season". According to them, the problems that are often faced by ruminant’s farmers during the dry season are scarcity of forage such as grass. In the dry season, forage from grasses or other sources will die from lack of water that would affect the availability of fodder. On the other hand, there are many underutilized agricultural waste such as rice straw, bran and banana weevil that could be utilized for ruminant feed. However, the waste was not able to last long so it is necessary to encourage the preservation of fodder. One way to preserve the waste is to make the material into a dry biscuit. Low water content in the biscuit feed can extend the shelf life of up to 6 months, it is because the activity of microorganism become obstructed. The combination of these three ingredients as an ingredient in biscuits are also intended that the nutritional content of the biscuit is more complete, so as to meet the nutritional needs required by livestock. Biscuit-making process, in general, there are several steps, namely: preparation of tools and materials, making dough, molding, baking, cooling and packing. (Herianto)
