“Effort never betrays results” perfectly describes the inspiring journey of Maghfiroh Izza Maulani, an UNY student who successfully earned a cum laude degree in the mathematics education study program with a GPA of 3.77. Izza, the eldest child of laborers Sudarjo and Sri Wahyuni, proved that determination and hard work will pay off.
However, Izza's path was full of challenges. While attending SMPN 2 Salam, Magelang, she was almost forced to stop her high school education due to financial constraints. Despite being the best graduate with a total National Examination score of 379.5, Izza had considered switching to a nearby vocational school that was more affordable. Luckily, the generosity of a benefactor allowed her to continue to SMAN 3 Magelang.
After graduating from high school, financial problems came back to haunt. “If you want to go to college, find your own money. We don't have the money,” said Sudarjo. Izza's dream of becoming a doctor seemed even further away, given the high cost of medical education. However, thanks to the guidance of her counseling teacher, she discovered a new interest in math and physics, and was registered for the KIP Kuliah scholarship by her school.
After successfully passing the SBMPTN test, Izza was accepted at UNY. However, she initially did not qualify for Bidikmisi due to the limited quota. “I was worried because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to pay the UKT,” she recalled. Luckily, there was an additional quota that allowed Izza to continue her studies without worrying about costs.
During lectures, Izza was disciplined to leave at 6am every day and always brought lunch to save costs. With a long distance from home and an irregular class schedule, she actively participated in student organizations, including the Mathematics Student Association and Teaching Campus. Although studying online during the pandemic was a challenge-often having to find a signal on the side of the road or at a neighbor's house-Izza never gave up. She also started teaching math tutoring at the beginning of semester 5 to hone her skills.
Finally, Izza earned her bachelor's degree in August 2022 and now teaches at SMAS Daar el Qolam, Tangerang. Her dream to continue her master's degree is still alive. “Every limitation has a lesson. Never stop learning just because of financial problems. There are still many ways to strive, and Allah will always help those who try,” she said.
