19 Doctoral Students of Michigan State University Explores Academic and Cultural Fellowship Possibilities in Graduate School of YSU

Graduate School of YSU was visited by Michigan State University (MSU) delegations from 14 – 22 June 2015. The Fellowship to Enhance Global Understanding to Indonesia visit was the follow-up of the 2013 program and the realization of cooperation program after the YSU Rector visit to MSU at 2014. The MSU delegates consisted of 19 doctoral students accompanied by Prof. Lynn Paine, the Director and Assistant Dean for the Office of International Studies in Education (OISE) and Laura Apol, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Teacher Education. A series of academic and cultural events were held to explore possibilities for fellowship programs between the two universities.
The welcome dinner was held on 14 June 2015 as a meeting moment between the delegates and the host families. The next day, welcoming ceremony was held to officially welcome them to YSU at Graduate School Auditorium. The delegates were welcomed by Prof. Dr. Zuhdan Kun Prasetyo, M.Ed., as the Director of Graduate School of YSU. “It is an important program for YSU, especially the Graduate School. We can adopt this program to be implemented in collaboration with other overseas universities. In addition, through a similar program we can send our students overseas,” he added. The welcoming ceremony was followed by an orientation course about Indonesian Education delivered by Prof. Suwarsih Madya, Ph.D.
The second day, the delegations visited six schools in Yogyakarta, namely Muhammadiyah Elementary School Condong Catur, Vocational High School 1 of Depok, Model Elementary School, Gungan Wukirsari Elementary School, Senior High School 9 of Yogyakarta and Special School of Yogyakarta. They not only visited formal school but also non-formal school, namely Pabelan Islamic Boarding School, Mungkid, Magelang.
They also visited three faculties at YSU, namely the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science, the Faculty of Education, and the Faculty of Languages and Arts. In addition, they visited two study centers of UGM, namely Center for Security and Peace Studies and Center for Religious and Cross-cultural Studies.
A joint seminar between the doctoral degree students of YSU and MSU to discuss Education Trends in Indonesia and USA was held on the third day, Wednesday (17/6/2015) at Graduate School Auditorium. It was attended by three YSU professors, namely Prof. Suyanto, Ph.D., Prof. Djemari Mardapi, Ph.D., and Prof. Dr, Marsigit, M.A. Each discussed Teacher Learning, National Education Standard, and Curriculum.
The MSU delegates also joined cultural activities, such as Batik workshop and excursion to Prambanan, Keraton, Malioboro and Borobudur.
All the events were officially closed on Monday (22/6/2015) at Graduate School Auditorium. It was attended by YSU leaders and host family. The YSU Rector hopes that the follow-up program of the visit will be held soon. (Sinta)
