Badminton SCU Brings Home Two Gold Medals in 2015 Unair Open

YSU Student Creativity Unit (SCU) of Badminton set a new record in Unair Open by bringing home two gold medals. YSU sent a contingent of 10 Badminton athletes, and unpredictably, the team was crowned champion after beating the defending champion, WR Supratman University 2 – 1.

In the final which was held on Friday, October 9th, 2015 morning in GOR Airlangga University, Surabaya, YSU suffered a surprise defeat after the men's singles at the party, Alang Panji Anggara failed to earn points and gave up to the player of University WR Supratman 0-1. Being left 0-1 from the rival, YSU almost lost in the second round after Rezha Arzhan/Dzulhan Heryantoro lost 15-21 in the first round. However, Rezha/Dzulhan of YSU could force the rubber and won the second round with 15-21 21-14 21-15 and drew 1-1 parity.

In the third final round, A new mixed doubles, Raden Wisnu Wardhana/Monica Intan were in action. The new duet was able to fade the Universitas WR Supratman hope by defeating the players in straight sets 21-17, 21-16. This eventually brought YSU to become the champion of 2015 Unair Open.

Previously, YSU team was only predicted to reach the seventh position in this tournament, but at the end, it was able to win over the last year finalist, Surabaya State University before beating the first favourite in the final round.

In addition, the success was followed by Rezha Arzhan/Monica Intan after managing to defeat their rival, that again made the YSU team is crowned champion. Rezha/Monica could win 21-19 in the first set. Learning from the surprising defeat, in the second set, Rezha/Monica were forced to surrender 17-21 and made the match to run in three sets. Even though at the beginning Rezha/Monica led the third set 9 -3, they were finally able to capture the set 21-19, that eventually brought them to be the new champion at the 2015 Unair Open badminton tournament.

Yogyakarta State University with its contingent of 10 athletes managed to surpass the targets by bringing home two gold medals. One bronze medal was also successfully received by YSU double team Yohanes Angga/Erza Bagaskara who failed to advance to the final stage after being defeated by Ali/Huda of UNESA, with the rubber game 19-21 21-17 21-15.
