Batik Anime: Batik Motif Innovation by YSU Students

Batik is one of Indonesian cultural heritage that is well known abroad. This implies that Indonesian youth need to preserve this traditional costume amid the technology advancement. In preserving the cultural heritage, some students of Yogyakarta State University designed contemporary batik motifs in the forms of anime. They are students of Biology Education Department of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

Those students chose anime, Japanese animation, to be their batik motifs because colourful characters can be formed by modifying the traditional batik motifs. Batik Anime is targeted for children, teenagers, and adults. Beside anime is also appealing for children, as usually children like cartoons.

Their innovation to insert anime in batik motifs has given a touch of modernity to batik. “We hope that customers will have more choices for the motifs. People usually want to find something new, that is what Batik Anime is all about,” they said.

To produce their batik, the students combined stamping and writing techniques. By combining both techniques, batik anime is expected to attract youth to wear batik. (oiap)
