Yogyakarta is rich with culture-based creative industries. It is common for various pottery products to be developed with classic designs and coloring motifs. This is what attracted Arif Purwantara, a student of the Craft Education study program, Faculty of Language and Arts, UNY, to research more about the form, function and finishing aspects of traditional piggy banks from the Senthong Kiwo Kasongan Ceramic Industry, Bantul, which is managed by Bambang Utoyo.

“Senthong Kiwo has its own differences or characteristics that distinguish it from other ceramic industries, especially the pottery industry in Kasongan. The difference lies in the shape and also the finishing that is produced is more innovative and creative, compared to pottery products in Kasongan in general, "said Arif.

Bambang Utoyo said, Senthong Kiwo can be regarded as an industry that uses a different colored finishing on the first ceramic objects in the Kasongan pottery industry area with shapes and models that are able to follow the contemporary trend and can be customized according to customer requests. In addition, the choice of shape or model of the piggy bank produced is unique and has a variety of colors. Customers can also choose the design according to their wishes and tastes in color.

Arif Purwantara stated that this piggy bank product in the form of a male and female pair serves as a traditional place to  save money, but sometimes there are also those who buy it as decoration on the work desk, as decoration on the home table and as wedding gifts. Its unique, attractive and classic shape and nuances of traditional Jogjakarta clothing can be the main attraction for the process of developing piggy bank products at Senthong Kiwo Industry.

UNY strongly supports efforts to document various cultural and tradition-based creative industry products by both UNY lecturers and students. Hopefully through this research, there will be more Yogyakarta creative products that can be an inspiration in promoting prosperity and eradicating poverty as promoted in the sustainable development agenda.
