Indonesia consists of islands that have very high risk for various type of disasters. Natural conditions in the past 10 years have continued to decline due to human factors and from the nature itself. This idea is mentioned by Setyo Eko Atmojo in open dissertation exam under the title “ Model Pembelajaran Kebencanaan berbasis SETS dalam Mitigasi Adaptasi dan Responsibility Siswa Sekolah ”. According to Setyo, elementary school students were chosen because education and learning in schools currently do not reach the issues of climate change that occur in Indonesia which will cause disasters globally, so there needs to be a learning model that accommodates this comprehensively.

One effort that can be done as an effort to reduce disaster risk, mitigation, adaptation and responsibility is through disaster learning activities at schools. It is necessary to develop a disaster learning model in schools that links Science, Environment, Technology and Society (SETS).

Theoretically, the results of this research and development are expected to provide theoretical benefits as part of efforts to increase knowledge about the procedures for developing learning products, especially the SETS-based natural disaster learning model in elementary schools.

For students, this model is expected to provide real knowledge and experience about disaster and mitigation efforts, adaptation and responsibility of elementary school students. In front of the examiners, Setyo also explained the practical benefits for teachers to be able to provide knowledge to teachers regarding disaster-prone areas and how to teach SETS-based natural disasters in elementary schools. For schools, this model is expected to provide solutions to reduce disaster risk, especially schools in disaster-prone areas. (ant)
