UNY LECTURER PRESENTED BLENDED LEARNING RESEARCH AT ICEMT 2019 IN JAPAN

Information technology has boost the progress of distance education through the implementation of e-learning. Blended Learning as a learning mode that combines the benefit of e-learning with the peculiarities of face-to-face learning has been favorable learning mode. In this learning mode, students are expected to be active, creative and collaborative in order to obtain optimal benefit. Varied and challenging online activities need to be created by lecturers in implementing the BL learning.

All of these interesting finding has been the research interest of Prof. Herman Dwi Surjono, Ph.D, lecturer of the Informatics Engineering Study Program of the Faculty of Engineering UNY. He shared his latest finding at "The 3rd International Conference on Education and Multimedia Technology (ICEMT 2019)" held in Nagoya, Japan 22 - 25 July 2019.

Prof. Herman Dwi Surjono, Ph.D presented a paper entitled "The Effects of Online Activities on Student Learning Outcomes in Blended Learning Environment ". His research set the focus on the effect of online activities in the BL learning environment on student learning outcomes. Online activities in the form of online discussions and online quiz work were applied in blended learning, namely through the UNY BESMART e-learning portal and face-to-face classes. The results of the study showed that these online activities proved effective in improving learning outcomes. Significantly online activities are positively correlated with student learning outcomes.

The 2019 ICEMT was held in collaboration with the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) with The Education University of Hong Kong and Silpakorn University, Thailand. The annual activity is intended as a means for scientists and researchers to exchange ideas and present research results, new ideas and experiences related to educational technology, applications of multimedia technology in education and e-learning. In the conference which was attended by researchers from more than 20 countries, Herman felt proud to represent UNY on the international event and establish cooperation with world-level researchers.

The paper that passed the selection at the conference will be published at the International Conference Proceedings Series by ACM (ISBN: 978-1-4503-7210-7) which is archived in the ACM Digital Library and indexed by Scopus, Ei Compendex, Thomson Reuters (ISI Web of Science) and others. Not only that, in the 2019 ICEMT, Herman also get the opportunity to work together and expand international research networks. (Herman Dwi Surjono)
