A WAY TO LOVE HOMELAND THROUGH BUDI SANDALS

As an archipelago country, Indonesia has diverse ethnic groups with their valuable, different cultures which should be preserved and introduced to the youth of Indonesia today. In addition, the culture preservation and introduction are able to boost a sense of belonging to homeland. Therefore, several students of YSU created sandals with cultural patterns of Indonesia, such as traditional houses, traditional clothes, and traditional dances of Indonesia. They are Puspitaningsih, Maryana and Muhammad Asri Saputra from Accounting Education Study Program, Heni Novita Gesti from Economics Education Study Program and Hafidh Akbar Hayyu from French Language Education Study Program.

According to Puspitaningsih, the sandals which called BUDI (Budaya Indonesia or Indonesian Culture) are created due to the fact that they are commonly worn by Indonesian citizens, either outdoor or indoor. “Budi Sandals is not only produced for Indonesian citizens, they can be souvenirs for foreign tourists,” Maryana said. She added that those sandals are not only forms of creative products but also media for introducing Indonesian culture to other people.

It is simple to make Budi Sandals. Heni Novita Gesti said that they only need eva foam with pattern, sandal clamping, and glue. “It also needs cutter, hand drill, scissors, laptor for designing and patterns for sandals,” she said.

The first step to make Budi Sandals is making Indonesian ethnic patterns and printing them in sponge eva. Then, the sponge is cut according to the pattern and hollowed by hand drill with 3 radius for upper interval and 5 radius for lower interval.

“You can also use a big nail to hollow the sandals,” Heni said. The final step is installing sandal clamping. This project for producing Budi Sandals gained Directorate Generale Fund as a Student Creativity Program-Entrepreneurship of 2015. (Dedy)
