YSU and UTM, Malaysia Collaboration: Discussion on Innovations in Teaching and Learning

Monday (March, 10th 2015) Prof. Baharuddin Bin Aris, the Dean of the Faculty of Education at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, gave his general lecture and discussion on Innovations in Teaching and Learnings. The program was hosted by YSU Office of International Affairs and Partnerships and Center for Educational Development and Quality Assurance in Collaboration with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia at YSU Main Hall.

During the program, the topic was very engaging and reflects the current approaches in the teaching and learning process in higher education. He began his presentation by exploring the need of providing a conducive learning environment and developing students’ higher order thinking skills.

“Kegiatan kuliah umum merupakan salah satu cara untuk branding universitas melalui penyebaran ilmu pengetahuan dan sekaligus menjalin kerjasama,” ungkapnya.
“Coducting ollaboration programs such as general lectures in other universities is one of the ways for university branding, and build stronger collaboration,” Baharuddin said.

In his lecture, he also focus on the need of meaningful learning experience. Interactions during the class among students and teachers are parts of meaningful learning experience.
He also shared the teaching and learning processes in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia which has implemented outcome-based education, meaning that it puts most attention to the graduates’ competences. Learner centered teaching and learning process is implemented and it is necessary to know how the learners learn best.

He added more elaboration on types of intellegence proposed by Howard Gardner that is 5 Minds for the Future including the disciplined mind, the synthesizing mind, the creative mind, the respectful mind, and the ethical mind. Then, he highlighted the practices of teaching and learning process using technologies such as problem-based learning, peer instruction, clickers, and learning catalytics. These methods have been applied in a number of universities around the world.

The Professor, who is an expert in multimedia and internet-based learning also invited audience in an Question and Answer session after his presentation. (Yuliana)
