YSU Faculty of Economics-Infrastructure University Kuala Lumpur ‘Understanding the Purpose of Education: Implications for Life Long Learning’

Towards the opening of three international undergraduate programs at the Faculty of Economics namely Management, Accounting, and Economics Education, the faculty hosted a studium generale by inviting Assoc. Prof. Dr. Seloamoney Palaniandy from Infrastructure University Kuala Lumpur (IUKL), Malaysia. His lecture entitled ‘Understanding the Purpose of Education: Implications for Life Long Learning’ was attended by around 350 freshmen at the faculty.

Dr. Selva, as he usually called, emphasized that the Indonesian and Malaysian education systems are not too distinct. Students are demanded to understand the diversity and should have unquenchable thirst of knowledge. They should not only learn a subject to their interest but also have knowledge in different fields. “Students should be all rounder and have knowledge in fields other than subjects you are currently studying,”Dr. Selva said.

He also encouraged the students to learn independently, that is not only relying on their teachers. He then added his points with an excerpt from Confucius ‘Give a man fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime.’He pointed out that if this concept is implemented in education, that is teaching students how to learn, the students will develop their learning skills and strategies independently. Thus it improves the quality of education through enhancing the learning process.

Dr. Sugiharsono, M.Si., the Dean of the Faculty of Economics, gave his opening speech for this event. “We hope to conduct other collaborations with IUKL in the future,” Sugiharsono said.

During the program, students’ showed their enthusiasm through actively participating in the question and answer session. Yudhistira, a student from the Accouting Education Department who took part in this event expressed his impression of the lecture. “I think that this program is important for us to enhance our motivation and broaden our knowledge. This is the first time for me to join a lecture by a lecturer from an overseas university,” he said.
