YSU to Welcome the Participants of Field Practice from UTM, Malaysia

To learn more about teaching-learning process in Indonesia, 14 students of Universiti Technology Malaysia (UTM) joined the teaching practice program in the labschools of Yogyakarta State University (YSU) (10/2/2014-7/2/2014). In four weeks, they were scheduled to have teaching practices in a senior high school (SMA N 4 Yogyakarta) and three vocational high schools (SMKN 2, SMK N 6, and SMK N 2 Depok Yogyakarta) in Yogyakarta. The program was a countinuation of the program of the Institute of Educational development of Quality Assurance (Lembaga Pengembangan dan Penjaminan Mutu Pendidikan/LPPMP) of YSU and UTM regarding to the collaboration to give in-country work experience.

Prof. Madya, Dr. Muhammad Sukri bin Saud, the representative of UTM, said in his speech that based on the satisfactory output of 10 students in the program of 2013, UTM increased the number of participants up to 14 students to have teaching practices in Indonesia. At some time in the future, the agreement to have teaching practice program for postgraduate students is planned.

“YSU students who taught at schools in Malaysia were excellent,” Prof. Madya. Dr. Muhammad Sukri bin saud commented to the YSU participants of field practice in Malaysia (July-August 2013). He said that their skills, morals, and knowledge often exceeded  the standards set by Malaysian school teachers. Therefore, YSU participants coming to Malaysia in July 2014  will have practices in other regions, namely Sabah, Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi.

Prof. Dr. Wawan Sundawan Suherman, M. Ed, head of LPPMP of YSU, welcomed the participants and expressed his gratitude to UTM for their trust to YSU. “I expect the program can improve the quality of education of UTM and YSU,” he said. 

14 participants of teaching practice from Malaysia in 2014 were the students of English education, culinary arts, mechanical engineering, mechanical-automotive engineering, electrical engineering, and sport education programs. Cristie Anak Cassidy Gundi, a participant from mechanical engineering study program expressed her happiness and felt blessed as she could join the program in Yogyakarta. She said that she would learn more about the curriculum of Indonesia and make the best of the learning as a basis for her to apply the skills and knowledge in her country.

Not only the field practice, Malaysian students also had workshops and field trips in Yogyakarta and the surroundings. (dedy/febi)
