The Faculty of Economics of YSU Holds an International Seminar to Discuss Good Governance and Human Resources

A good governance is one of the key factors of a country to overcome various global financial problems. Therefore, the Faculty of Economics of YSU responded this by holding an International Seminar entitled “Enhancing Economic Growth through Clean Governance and Human Resource Management,” Wednesday (22/4/2015) as the celebration of 51th YSU anniversary as well as the 4th anniversary of the Faculty of Economics. Dr. Ratna Candra, the committee chairman, said that the seminar was held in order to discuss various pivotal issues in good governance either in public or private sector.

The seminar which was opened by Prof. Suwarsih Madya, Ph.D., Vice Rector for Cooperation and Partnership Affairs of YSU invited Prof. Khondaker M. Rahman, Ph.D from School of Business Nanzan University, Nagoya, Japan, Dr. Sugiharto as President Commissioner of PT Pertamina, Prof. Hawjeng Chiou from National Taiwan Normal University and Mahfud Sholihin, Ph.D from Faculty of Economics and Business, Gadjah Mada University.

Sugiharto, the President Commissioner of PT Pertamina, explained that PT Pertamina is consistent to be a world-class national energy company with an aggresive upstream and profitable downstream. “Pertamina commits to provide subsidized fuel whoever runs the country,” he said. “As the Decision of the Minister of State-Owned Enterprises year 2002 No. 117/M-MBU/2002,  Pertamina strives to provide a good corporate governance. Since 2009, Pertamina has implemented a roadmap Good Corporate Governance (GCG) started by Compliance, Conformance, Performance, Sustainability phases. The GCG roadmap implemented Transparency, Responsibility, Accountability, Independence and Fairness principles increasing from 86.79 in 2010 to 95.53 in 2013,” he added.

Hawjeng Chiou from National Taiwan Normal University told the recent difficulties happened in Taiwan due to the low birth rate. Consequently, Taiwan is in difficulties to find well-qualified resources. “In 2000, the birth rate in Taiwan was only 1.76, whereas in 2012 it decreased to 1.1. In addition, the bachelors in this country earn ovly US$ 700 for their first salary which forces them to find job in abroad. According to Oxford Economics, Taiwan will be the country with the highest mismatch between supply and demand for potential labor,“ he said.       

Mahfud Sholihin from Gadjah Mada University emphasized the relationship between economic rate of a country with Human Resources and Accountancy. “Indonesia is considered as a country with the highest corruption, software piracy rate and the low economic rate. He stated that the amount of accountants in Indonesia is not only the key factors to decrease coruption rate, but also the integrity of such accountants,” he closed. (fadhli)
