Three papers of students majoring in Biology Education, Faculty of Mathematics and Science, Yogyakarta State University (YSU) passed the elimination stage and were eligible to be presented at 2015 International Conference on Biological and Environmental Science (BIOES), not so long ago. The conference was organized by Universal Researcher at The Kee Resort and Spa Hotel, Patong, Kathu, Phuket, Thailand. YSU sent delegation consisting of 6 Biology Education students, namely Anisa Anggraeni and Rian Nurhasanah with the paper entitled Anthelmintic Test of Fern Rhizome Extract of Dryopteris Sparsa at Ascaridia galli; Cici Nurmaidha Tanjung and Andi Joko Purnomo with the paper entitled Characterization and Haemolytic activity of Isolated Bacteria from Saliva Samples on Characterization and Haemolytic activity of Isolated Bacteria from Bat’s Saliva Samples on The Menoreh Kars Area, and; Muhammad Iqbal Pradana and Anton Suwardi with the paper entitled The Synthesize of Silver Nanoparticle (Ag-Np) made from Waste of Kotagede Silver Handicraft Industry as an Antimicrobial Against Staphylococcus aureus and Eschericia coli.

Anisa asserted that YSU delegation is among two university delegations who are still pursuing undergraduate degree, while other participants are already titled Professor, Assistant Professor, lecturer and graduate. "The papers received are 60 but only 24 papers are eligible to proceed to the next stage. In this event, YSU delegates got remarkable achievements as 3 papers passed the initial stage and got the chance for being presented in such activities,” she continued.

Anisa Anggraeni and Rian Nurhasanah conducted research on the ability of fern roots as anti worm on Ascaridia galli. Anthelmintik is a medicine for ascarias disease caused by Ascaris lumbricoides which infects many children aged 5-10 years. One of the plants that can be used is Dryopteris filix mas, but the researchers replaced it with Dryopteris sparsa as both belong to the same genus. The worm being research is Ascaridia galli. This research aims to know the power of anthelmintic in the fern root extracts and find out the influence of concentration variation against the Lethal Concentration (LC100) 100 and Lethal Time 100 (LT100).

This study was in-vitro experiment by dividing it into three research groups, namely the positive control group tested using 0.2% citric piperazin; the negative control group tested using 0.9% NaCl and treatment group tested using extract of Dryopteris sparsa roots. Treatments were divided into four groups with treatment concentration of 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%.

From the research results, it can be inferred that the root extract has anthelmintic capability because it may cause death to Ascaridia galli worm. In addition, concentration variations of the root extract influenced Lethal Concentration 100 (LC100) and Lethal Time 100 (LT100), where the value of LC100 is 52.241% and LT100 is 154.454 minutes. Furthermore, 0.2% citric piperazin treatment can cause mortality of the worm up to 100% for 237 minutes and 0.9% NaCl treatment can cause mortality of worm up to 100% for 519 minutes. (Anisa)
