Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) recently hosted the Young Puppeteer Festival (Festival Dalang Cilik) as part of its 61st anniversary celebrations. The event, held at UNY's Foodcourt, featured 18 young puppeteers selected from 76 finalists across Yogyakarta, Central Java, and East Java.

A highlight of the festival was a special performance by Rafa Kusuma Atma Wibowo, a ninth-grade student from SLB Negeri Pembina Yogyakarta. Rafa, who has Down syndrome, captivated the audience with his rendition of "Budalan Wadyabala," a story depicting warriors preparing for battle. His 15-minute performance showcased his unique style and deep understanding of the art form, earning admiration from attendees.

Rafa's participation underscores UNY's commitment to providing equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities. By featuring performers like Rafa, the university emphasizes the importance of inclusivity in cultural events and the role of traditional arts in empowering all members of society.

Rector of UNY,  Prof. Sumaryanto expressed his strong support for Rafa’s performance, affirming the university’s commitment to inclusive cultural spaces. “Rafa’s performance is proof that the arts are a space open to all. There is no discrimination here. We are proud to be part of a platform that nurtures young, talented artists like Rafa,” said Prof. Sumaryanto.

Rafa’s father, Ludy Bimasena, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the UNY festival committee for the opportunity given to his son. He shared that Rafa was excited to return and perform again, noting that such experiences greatly encourage children with special needs to grow and express themselves confidently.

Ludy also emphasized that Rafa’s involvement should serve as an example of how children with special needs deserve equal opportunities in cultural and artistic events. By giving space to performers like Rafa, UNY reinforces the message that inclusion and accessibility are essential in preserving tradition and empowering every member of society.
