To support environmental sustainability, UNY continues to encourage the reduction of vehicles entering campus in its environment by promoting the use of bicycles in the campus environment. This policy follows the world campus ranking based on Green Campus performance.

According to the Head of the UNY Greenmetric Team, Prof. Didik Nurhadiyanto, bicycles can be used for transportation activities between units on campus to support this. "For example, from the rectorate to the faculty, you can cycle," he said on Saturday (21/10). UNY has also limitedly provided bicycles at certain points that the UNY academic community can use to move places. In addition, UNY also provides shuttle buses for inter-campus transportation from Wates and Gunungkidul to UNY Central Campus and electric cars for mobility within UNY Central Campus.

In addition to lecturers and education staff, several students have done the same thing, namely using bicycles as their daily transportation, even from distant homes. One Faculty of Education and Psychology student, Istianah, also uses a bicycle from her boarding house in Condongcatur to UNY every day, covering a distance of 2.5 kilometers. According to her, using a bicycle saves transportation expenses for boarders like her and keeps her body healthy by exercising at the same time.

UNY has consistently participated in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings since 2016. In the 2022 ranking, UNY was ranked 17th in Indonesia and 126th in the world.

UNY's commitment to environmental sustainability is manifested in several initiatives, such as the use of renewable energy sources, such as solar panels and biogas, the implementation of a waste management system that includes composting and recycling, the promotion of environmentally friendly transportation, such as bicycles and electric vehicles, the development of green spaces on campus and the integration of environmental education into the curriculum.

UNY's participation in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings is a valuable opportunity to compare its performance with other universities worldwide and identify improvement areas. The rankings also help raise awareness of the importance of environmental sustainability in higher education.

In addition to participating in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, UNY is also a member of the Universitas Indonesia GreenMetric Network (UI GreenMetric NUS), a network of universities committed to environmental sustainability. The network provides a forum for universities to share best practices and collaborate on research and development projects.
