BOARDING SCHOOL POLICY IN IMPLEMENTING CHARACTER EDUCATION

Boarding school is quite popular in Indonesia. The presence of boarding schools in Indonesia is an effective educational model in educating intellectuality, skills, character building and instilling moral values in students so that students will know more about the values of truth, honesty, virtue, wisdom, and compassion as universal values of religion. To learn more about how a boarding school instilling character in its students, a group of students from the Education Policy Study Program at the Faculty of Education, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, conducted a research on the boarding school policy in instilling character education at MTs Binaul Ummah Bawuran Pleret Bantul. Students participated on the research are Rimawati Septyaningsih, Tri Indah Widianingsih and Adinda Dhafa Nona.

According to Rimawati Septyaningsih, the presence of boarding schools in Indonesia is an effective educational model in educating intellectuality, skills, character building and instilling moral values in students. Thus, children will know more about the value of truth, honesty, virtue, wisdom, and compassion as universal values that religion has. "It is interesting to note that bullying still one of the problems that occur when school failed to give maximum supervision. Such problem may not appear on most today boarding school. But is important to ensure that such problem will never appear and cause a moral crisis in students” she said. Therefore, there needs to be guidance from the school in an effort to instill character in students, so that it is hoped that students in Indonesia can develop properly as they should. If the next generation has good character and character, then the quality of education in Indonesia will increase.

Adinda Dhafa Nona explained that after analyzing the data obtained from this study, the implementation of the boarding school policy at MTs Binaul Ummah Bawuran Pleret Bantul had referred to the goal of improving the character of its students. It can be said that because the policies issued by the school require students to have a good personality or character in accordance with the mission and vision of the school. "Although this school can be said to have just been established, the implementation of policies on character cultivation is quite good," said Adinda. "It is proven by the large number of students who have academic and non-academic achievements as well as students in this school who are known for their prominent Quranic characters". The aspects of character education include religious aspects, honesty, tolerance, discipline, hard work and love for the country. MTs Binaul Ummah is also recommended to increase extracurricular activities or activities outside of learning hours for students, especially in activities related to character development attitudes and also improving the process of character building students by mentoring and habituation to have a positive influence on students.
