UNY actively supports various efforts to cultivate the community both for achievement purposes and to support a healthy lifestyle. Through various sports facilities on the UNY Campus, many general public and professional athletes have exercised and competed. To provide more comprehensive access, the construction of sports facilities is not only centered on the main campus of UNY. This reason encouraged UNY to build several sports facilities on the Gunungkidul campus, which were officially inaugurated by the Regent of Gunungkidul, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of UNY, Chairman of UNY University Senate and Rector of UNY on September 9, 2023.
"This year, UNY celebrated National Sports Day with the community, partners and faculty members at Semanu Campus, Gunungkidul. The total budget that has been disbursed to build all these facilities is more than 50 billion Rupiah, including for the construction of sports facilities. Hopefully, these facilities can benefit us all," said UNY Rector, Prof. Sumaryanto.
"The Regent of Gunungkidul is very concerned about sports by always setting an example. He regularly jogs from Nglipar to Wonosari at least once a week. Even for certain employees in the Pamong Praja Unit, the Transportation Agency, Disaster Management every month must run at 13.00. UNY, as a university that has a Faculty of Sport, hopefully, can contribute to the advancement of sports in Gunungkidul Regency," said Edi Praptono, Assistant for Economy and Development of Gunung Kidul, representing the Regent.
In accordance with previous traditions, the commemoration of National Sports Day was filled with joint sports activities in the form of healthy walk and field tennis invitations between agencies in Gunungkidul, as well as the distribution of door prizes in the form of bicycles and other prizes.
