Festival Dalang Cilik (Young Puppeteer Festival) 2025, part of Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta's (UNY) 61st-anniversary celebrations, brought together 58 young Dalang (puppeteers) aged 9 to 15 from Yogyakarta, Central Java, and East Java. Over three days, from May 13 to 15, 2025, eighteen finalists showcased their talents, celebrating the rich tradition of Javanese puppetry in a vibrant cultural display.
The festival was designed not only as a platform for young talents but also as an effort to cultivate appreciation and understanding of Javanese culture, particularly the art of wayang kulit, among children. "This event is more than just a performance—it’s an educational space to instill noble values and develop intellectual and spiritual growth through the storytelling of wayang," explained Galang Prastowo, M.A., a member of the organizing committee. The event was judged by distinguished figures in the field, including Prof. Suminto A. Sayuti from UNY, Prof. Dr. Sarwanto from ISI Surakarta, and Udreka, M.Sn. from ISI Yogyakarta.
The festival featured a range of traditional stories, including the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Lampahan Maheswari. A standout performance came from Clara Acintya Yufi, a young female puppeteer from Sukoharjo, Central Java. Clara, a second-grade junior high school student, captivated the audience with her interpretation of "Srikandi Mustokoweni." Her skilled manipulation of the puppets and clear storytelling were met with admiration, proving that the art of puppetry is alive and thriving among the younger generation.
Another remarkable participant was Dirgaraya Satria Pamenang, the youngest contestant in the competition. His presence added a special charm to the festival, demonstrating that age is no barrier to embracing cultural heritage. His enthusiasm and dedication were clear examples of how wayang kulit continues to inspire young minds.
The 2025 Little Puppeteer Festival concluded with appreciation for all participants, highlighting the importance of preserving traditional art forms. It also served as a reminder that cultural legacy is best maintained by passing it on to the next generation, ensuring that the timeless art of wayang kulit continues to flourish.
