Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta’s Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA UNY) recently partnered with Universitas Udayana's Faculty of Agriculture and Bali’s Regional Research and Innovation Agency (BRIDA) for a joint study on developing new orchid varieties native to Bali. As part of their collaborative research, teams from both universities conducted observation and cultivation trials aimed at producing indoor-friendly orchid bonsai suitable for various environments.
The project’s progress was highlighted during a visit to FMIPA UNY on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, by Dr. I Putu Sudiarta, M.Si., Ph.D., Dean of Faculty of Agriculture at Universitas Udayana. He emphasized that this collaboration extends well beyond a formal agreement. “This is not just an MoU or MoA on paper. We have carried out real activities fully supported by BRIDA, including funding,” he said. The collaboration has already resulted in the publication of a book detailing the diversity of Balinese orchids and laid the groundwork for indoor orchid bonsai production.
Beyond academic outcomes, the partnership has also sought to raise public awareness of local biodiversity. FMIPA UNY showcased their orchid collections—including forms developed through joint research—during UNY’s “Pasar Kangen” event, receiving enthusiastic responses from visitors.
FMIPA UNY Dean Prof. Dadan Rosana, M.Si., praised the partnership and highlighted its cultural and regional significance, noting that the synergy between Yogyakarta and Bali benefits both communities. “This collaboration is mutually advantageous—not just for our institutions, but also for the cities of Jogja and Bali,” he said, reaffirming FMIPA UNY’s unwavering support for continued joint research in orchid cultivation
