Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) recently welcomed an academic delegation from Western Sydney University (WSU), Australia, consisting of five exchange students and two accompanying faculty members. Facilitated by the UNY International Office, the visit formed part of the University's ongoing efforts to strengthen international collaboration in education and cultural exchange.
One of the key highlights of the visit was a tour of the Indonesian Education Museum (Museum Pendidikan Indonesia/MPI) at UNY. Through this activity, the University introduced international participants to the history and development of Indonesia's education system. Beyond serving as a cultural and historical learning experience, the program also reflected UNY's commitment to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
The academic exchange was conducted under the theme "(Poly)Crisis, Cross-Cultural Responses & Resilience in Indonesia and Australia Context," which aimed to broaden participants' perspectives and deepen their understanding of the multiple crises affecting both Indonesia and Australia, while exploring cross-cultural approaches to resilience.
During the museum visit, the WSU students and faculty explored the evolution of Indonesia's education system through a rich collection of historical artifacts, photographs, archival materials, and educational exhibits that document the nation's educational journey across different historical periods. The visit was guided by the Indonesian Education Museum team through an interactive and engaging approach, allowing participants to gain meaningful insights into Indonesia's educational heritage.
The program also involved UNY students, who served as facilitators and cultural companions throughout the visit. During the discussion session, the WSU participants expressed strong interest in the development of education in Indonesia. They actively exchanged ideas and compared educational experiences from their respective countries, creating an enriching cross-cultural dialogue.
According to a representative of the Indonesian Education Museum, visits such as this play an important role in fostering intercultural understanding while strengthening international academic networks.
"Through this museum, we not only introduce the history of Indonesian education but also the values that have long served as the foundation of our national education system and remain relevant in supporting sustainable development today," the representative said.
This academic visit demonstrates UNY's commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals through international academic programs, cross-cultural engagement, and global partnerships. By continuously expanding collaboration with higher education institutions around the world, UNY seeks to strengthen its international network while creating an increasingly inclusive and globally oriented learning environment.
Looking ahead, UNY remains committed to organizing similar international programs as part of its broader mission to strengthen educational diplomacy and make meaningful contributions to sustainable development on a global scale.
