On Monday, March 24, 2014, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) hosted a meeting with Dr. John Hope, Associate Dean of International Programs at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, to discuss a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The meeting, held at UNY’s Rectorate, was attended by the Vice Rector for Development and Cooperation and representatives from the Graduate School and the International Affairs Office.

The proposed MoU outlines a Joint International Programs framework, focusing on student exchange initiatives as an initial step. Priority areas highlighted by the University of Auckland include culture and Islamic studies. Dr. Hope explained that students in double degree programs would spend most of their study time in New Zealand, while sandwich program students would receive degrees from the institution where they completed the majority of their coursework.

UNY representative Prof. Suwarsih Madya emphasized the importance of mutual benefit in the partnership. The discussion also included practical matters such as accommodation and living costs for students studying in New Zealand, ensuring their readiness and support during the exchange.

The University of Auckland welcomed proposals to support UNY lecturers through doctoral studies, short courses, and guest lecturing opportunities. The collaboration is expected to ease the process of obtaining Letters of Acceptance (LoA), which are crucial for scholarship applications, and help lecturers enhance their academic development through improved international access.(Yuliana)
