Based on data from the Directorate General of Regional Administration of the Ministry of Home Affairs, in Indonesia, there have been around 17,768 fire cases throughout 2021. In particular, short circuits of electricity caused 5,274 fire cases. With so many fire cases, various efforts to prevent and deal with fire cases are essential.
"UNY realizes that the synergy between government, universities, industry, and society is critical. With collaboration between practitioners, lecturers, and students, I hope that in the future, there will be knowledge and experience development. Hopefully, we can increase awareness of the importance of safety in handling fires," said Professor Margana in his remarks at the "National Conference on Fire Safety and Inauguration of MPK2I of Yogyakarta-Central Java and the Signing of the MoU" on Saturday, July 23, 2022.
Muhammad Darmawan, as Secretary General of MPK2I, is not only inaugurated the management of MPK2I Yogyakarta-Central Java and signed the MoU but also built fire safety awareness. Therefore, in this activity, several competent speakers were present, namely Evan Nur Setya Hadi (Head of the Sub-Directorate of Fire Infrastructure and Information at the Ministry of Home Affairs), Fatma Lestari (Director of Disaster Risk Reduction Center, Universitas Indonesia), Subkhan (Chairman of the Forum Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment BUMN Construction), and Emanuel Eko Haryanto ( Education and Training, HR development and MPK2I Certification).
The United Nations does not explicitly link the fire problem to the issues in the SDGs. However, the high number of forest fires for reasons of land clearing in the clearing of plantation land is enough to have an impact on climate change and damage to the land ecosystem. Meanwhile, the rise of fire cases in densely populated areas of the poor is also a problem that hinders poverty alleviation. Therefore, effective and efficient fire management is crucial.
