Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) marked its 61st anniversary with the lively celebration of "Pasar Kangen," which officially opened on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at the UNY Rectorate Hall. The event embraced the theme "Synergy of Innovation to Achieve Excellence," featuring traditional arts, with a captivating performance of Campur Bawur Singo Barong from Sanden, Wonolelo, Sawangan, Magelang. The opening ceremony was attended by members of UNY's academic community, Pasar Kangen partners, and the public. UNY Rector Prof. Dr. Sumaryanto, M.Kes., AIFO, inaugurated the event by sounding traditional otok-otok toys, evoking a sense of nostalgia and setting the festive mood. "UNY's campus holds significance for the community. May our collaborative synergy continue to preserve our culture," he expressed warmly.
The Chairperson of the 61st Anniversary, Dr. Ir. Gunadi, S.Pd., M.Pd., IPU, explained that this year's celebration featured 16 main activities, beginning with a joint exercise session on February 21, 2025. "The series of events includes health check-ups, blood donations, social services, sports competitions, a fun run, Pasar Kangen, and will culminate with a closing ceremony on May 21, 2025," he shared enthusiastically. Dr. Gunadi, who is also a lecturer at UNY's Faculty of Engineering, emphasized that the anniversary's theme, "Synergy of Innovation to Achieve Excellence," was realized through the collaborative efforts of various faculties, including the Faculty of Engineering as the host, along with the Faculty of Health and Sport Sciences (FIKK), Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), and the Faculty of Vocational Studies (FV).
Pasar Kangen became a lively space where visitors could immerse themselves in traditional Indonesian arts and culinary delights. Local artisans displayed handmade crafts, while food stalls served nostalgic treats, allowing attendees to reconnect with cultural roots. Traditional performances, including Javanese dances and wayang kulit (shadow puppetry), enlivened the atmosphere, drawing crowds eager to experience the richness of local heritage.
Beyond the cultural showcases, Pasar Kangen also served as a platform for community engagement. Interactive workshops were held, inviting visitors to learn traditional crafts and culinary techniques. The event was not just a celebration but also an opportunity for younger generations to appreciate and participate in preserving cultural traditions.
