Gadgets have become integral to children's daily lives, serving as tools for play, entertainment, and learning. However, excessive gadget use can negatively impact children's social, emotional, and academic development. This concern was highlighted by Argent Prianda Dewanta, a student and President of BEM Fishipol UNY, during a community outreach program in Nangsri, Srihardono, Pundong, Bantul.
Argent emphasized the crucial role of parents in guiding children's gadget use. "Excessive gadget interaction can lead to reduced social interaction, impaired understanding of social norms, anxiety, stress, and sleep disorders," he explained. Moreover, gadget dependency can hinder critical thinking, creativity, and focus. He advised parents to implement regular screen time schedules, establish gadget-free zones, and encourage family activities without gadgets.
The outreach, initiated by UNY’s KKNM-17782 students, responded to community concerns about monitoring children's gadget use and preventing gadget addiction. Ilyas Nur Muhammadin, the program coordinator, expressed hope that parents would gain practical strategies to guide their children in selecting appropriate content and engage in meaningful discussions about digital consumption.
This initiative was supported by KKNM-17782 team members: Ilyas Nur Muhammadin, Rayhan Naafi Fahreza, Frea Basitha Suri, Niskala Nailal Izza, Eko Setyo Prayogi, Dwi Saputri, Cindy Setyowati, Zahra Nabilla Putri, Viko Dwi Cahyono, and Azfa Mecca Taffana.
