UNY STUDENTS DEVELOP SPORT TOURISM IN KLATEN

Sport tourism is still not much developed in Indonesia. However, several sport tourism activities in Indonesia include the Sport Marathon, Jakarta Marathon, and the International Tour de Banyuwangi Ijen (ItdBI) bicycle race in Banyuwangi Regency, East Java.  This matter has set the Koskma Research Unit of the Faculty of Sports Science UNY to initiate sports tourism in Gunung Gajah Village, Bayat, Klaten through the Holistic Program for Village Development and Empowerment (PHP2D).

According to Miya Kurniawati, they targeted Gunung Gajah Village because it has tourism potential at Arjuna Peak, surrounded by forest belonging to Perhutani were teak, mahogany trees with a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere and the characteristics of its residents who have friendly personalities and uphold cooperation. “This village still upholds customs and has several arts such as wayang, gamelan art, and dances. In addition, in the field of sports, gymnastics and volleyball are the choices of women's groups and become routine activities every week," said Miya.

Muhammad Hajid Nugraha added that several potentials in the village require empowerment and development activities in terms of the quality of human resource knowledge and management of natural resources. UNY student team has carried out training on tourism village potential, tourist attraction management training, arrangement of tourist attractions, gymnastics training, and outbound training themed EduSport. The community learns to manage ecotourism, outbound, and sports and culture festival packages.
