The Overseas Education and Learning Program (OELP) from Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) Singapore allowed students to learn about Indonesian culture, including gamelan and batik at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) on Wednesday (4/9). Previously, they also visited Prambanan Temple.

FBSB lecturer at UNY, Nila Kurnia Sari, M.Pd, explained that the NYP students studied gamelan and Javanese dance to strengthen their understanding of gamelan music theory and playing techniques. “By playing various instruments, they can understand the cultural meaning of gamelan in Javanese society,” she said. Participants collaborated to create a harmonious ensemble, with the guidance of experienced gamelan musicians who provided personalized instruction and feedback. In addition, students also gained a deeper understanding of Javanese culture, strengthening their appreciation of Indonesia's cultural diversity, while supporting the values of peace and harmony.

In studying Javanese dance, students learn about traditional arts rooted in cultural heritage and aesthetics. Nila Kurnia Sari added that dance provides insight into sustainable practices and ecological awareness. “Through dance, students explore harmony, balance, and respect for nature,” she explained. Besides learning choreography, they also practiced wearing traditional dance costumes that reflect the beauty and symbolism of Javanese culture.

At UNY's Faculty of Engineering, NYP students learned natural dyes in making environmentally friendly batik. FT lecturer Achmad Arifin, Ph.D., explained that the activity began with a seminar themed “Sustainability in Batik Painting”. Afterwards, students practiced batik painting techniques, using natural dyes, and brought their work as traditional Indonesian souvenirs.

Rico Lim, one of the NYP students, expressed his admiration for Prambanan Temple and stated that he is interested in learning more about the history of the temple. Rico also plans to promote Prambanan Temple to his friends and family after returning to Singapore.
