In October 2024, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) hosted the Education and Technology Summer School (ETSS) with a focus on harnessing Artificial Intelligence (AI) for sustainable education. The event, themed “EcoEduTech: Potential of AI in Reshaping Teaching and Learning,” brought together participants, including PhD students, early-career researchers, and educational professionals from across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

The ETSS 2024 was conducted in a blended format. The program began with an online preparatory phase in September, which facilitated initial networking and discussions on the core topics. This was followed by an intensive on-site phase held at UNY from October 7-11. The final phase, conducted online from October 14-18, provided a reflective platform for participants to consolidate their learning and discuss future research collaborations.

Throughout the on-site sessions, participants engaged in interactive workshops, expert-led lectures, and poster presentations. Renowned speakers from international institutions, including scholars from Germany, France, and Malaysia, shared insights on how AI can enhance teaching methodologies, improve student engagement, and support sustainable education practices. The program also included cultural visits to local landmarks in Yogyakarta, allowing participants to experience traditional educational practices embedded in the region’s cultural heritage.

Prof. Dr. Moch. Bruri Triyono, chair of the ETSS 2024 organizing committee, emphasized the significance of integrating AI with educational strategies to meet the challenges of the 21st century. “Our goal was to create a platform that not only discusses the potential of AI but also examines practical implementations in diverse educational contexts,” he noted during the closing ceremony.

Participants left the summer school equipped with new skills, innovative ideas, and a broader network of international collaborators. The event underscored UNY’s commitment to advancing educational technology and fostering global partnerships aimed at sustainable development.
