Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) has once again recorded an achievement in sustainability. In the UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings (UIGM) 2026, UNY ranked 16th nationally and 115th globally. The achievement further underscores UNY’s consistency in developing a sustainable and environmentally friendly campus ecosystem while supporting the achievement of sustainable development goals. UNY also ranked second among LPTK/former IKIP institutions in terms of sustainability.
The achievement was also marked by UNY receiving a Gold Certificate of Compliance from UI GreenMetric. The certificate was awarded in recognition of UNY’s commitment to meeting the seven criteria of the UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings through various sustainability programs implemented throughout 2026.
Head of the UNY Ranking Team, Prof. Soni Nopembri, expressed his appreciation for the achievement. According to him, UNY’s improved position was inseparable from the shared commitment of all work units to strengthening sustainability programs and governance. “Maintaining this achievement requires shared commitment and consistency in providing high-quality data,” said the UNY Vice Rector for Cooperation and Information Systems on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.
He explained that success in sustainability rankings is not merely about pursuing a higher position, but also reflects an institution’s progress in building consistent and measurable systems. Therefore, strengthening documentation, providing supporting evidence, and fostering cross-unit collaboration are important elements in improving UNY’s performance in future rankings. “UNY’s success in various global rankings needs to be supported by increasingly robust documentation and reporting systems,” Prof. Soni added.
In UIGM 2026, the assessment covered seven sustainability aspects: Setting and Infrastructure, Energy and Climate Change, Waste, Water, Transportation, Education and Research, and Governance and Digitalization. These seven aspects represent universities’ efforts to build sustainable campus environments while integrating sustainability principles into governance and academic activities.
This year’s result also shows progress compared with the previous year. In UIGM 2025, UNY ranked 18th nationally and 95th globally. By reaching 16th place nationally in 2026, UNY improved its national standing by two positions.
The achievement demonstrates that sustainability at UNY continues to be developed as part of the institution’s broader strategy. Various programs related to environmental management, energy efficiency, waste management, sustainable transportation, education and research, and governance continue to be strengthened through collaborative efforts.
Previously, UNY also held a Workshop on Finalizing the UIGM 2026 Submission and Preparing the Sustainability Report as part of efforts to strengthen sustainability data governance. The activity involved representatives from work units and members of UNY’s ranking data management team.
Through its achievement in UIGM 2026, UNY further reinforces its commitment to becoming a university that excels not only in academics and research, but also in delivering green, sustainable, and impactful campus governance for society and the environment.
