Yogyakarta State University managed to maintain its position by remaining in the first cluster of non-vocational tertiary educational institutions at the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education in 2018. The Director General of Science and Technology Institutions and Higher Education Patdono Suwignjo said that this clustering was conducted to map Indonesian universities under the auspices of the Ministry of Research and Technology to improve the quality of universities continuously high in implementing the Tridharma of higher education.

YSU’s graduate school student of educational technology, Hartoto dan Sella Mawarni, presented their work entitled Developing Learning Analytics Framework Based on Self-Regulated Learning Principle for MOOCs at the Educational Technology World Conference (ETWC) 2016 on 31 July to 4 August 2016 in Bali. The work presented by Hartoto and Sella discussed learning analytics and MOOCs in order to develop and implement the framework in Indonesia.

It is unbelievable for the Carnival Team of the Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta Engineering Faculty, which has just been named as the overall champion of the WORLD ART CAMP OLYMPIADE in Dapitan City, Philippines (18-26 / 07/2018). The grand event of Indonesia Robot Contest (KRI) National Level 2018 has been held in Sportorium University of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta on 11 - 13 July 2018. A total of 91 teams from various universities in Indonesia show skill and robot competitions in this contest. UNY sent five teams in this contest, including Team Maestro_Evo in ABU Indonesia Robot Contest, Team Mobo-Evo in Indonesian Wheelball Robot Contest, Gareng Punk Team in Indonesian Fire Extinguisher Robot Contest, Team Al-'Aadiyaat in Humanoid Robot Soccer Contest Indonesia, and Tim Rosemery in Indonesian Art Robot Contest.

After a long journey since the competition at the National and Regional level of Asia, Garuda UNY Team (GUT) managed to get tickets to compete in the Drivers' World Championship in London. The competition is a fast-paced race among world-class energy-efficient cars represented by 3 regional Shell Eco-Marathon (SEM) Asia, America and Europe totaling 9 teams. To be able to practice before entering a real competition, GUT is required through a technical inspection process as a condition to qualify for DWC.
